“Users who participate in standards committee deliberations must be patient,” Jackson added. “Solution providers have to incorporate capabilities into future releases of their software to support these new standards. Users sometimes wait for years to see a definition they helped create implemented in the software applications, if it is implemented at all.”

Real progress, he continued, “will be made to the degree that software providers implement the imperfect standards we have today in their own software applications. Participation by solution providers in standards committees is essential. Individual software providers cannot implement data-exchange efforts on their own,” Jackson pointed out. “Those efforts would only lead to even greater fragmentation than we have now.”
