What’s the story behind Solid Edge’s database-less data management solution?

How can you have a database-less data management solution? To start, most data management solutions for mechanical and other system types of solutions that have a server and a client usually operate with a database. That database holds many different types of information, including a 3D definition, which is what you get with the mechanical CAD solution. The problem is that when you use a database, there are many different issues that can occur and it is a complex task managing that aspect of the solution. A good portion of organizations don’t want to deal with that complexity. They want to avoid those types of problems that occur   with any database-based solution.

Solid Edge made an interesting transition. They came up with the solution that uses the Windows Indexer to basically supply data management type of capabilities. First, this is a file-based system. Files are still on your hard drive, but when you make changes or when you have versions and iterations, the system keeps track of that. Users are also capable of locking others out of a document or model when they wish to be the only one using it. The system can also support distributed development, meaning if you have multiple people located in different areas of the country or the world and you all want to contribute to the same design, design files or your design models can be part of a Google Drive or Dropbox share folder and everybody gets the updates. These functionalities are based within the file or are enabled by the files and merely sharing the file enables everybody to get on the same page.

Solid Edge has employed  a different approach. It’s very simplified, easier. This approach avoids the issues that you have with database oriented solutions.

That is the database-less data management solution from Solid Edge. Take care and talk soon.
