Ahh, part reuse, you're an old problem. Aren't you. In the past two decades, many enterprise systems have sought to address part reuse. We've had supplier management systems. We've had part categorization systems. We've had shape-based search. Yet the problem seems to still persist. Engineers, pressed for time, create new CAD models and release them as part of new design projects. Part numbers proliferate. Opportunities for part number reduction sail by. Opportunities for larger volume discounts with suppliers slip away. The enterprise groans.

Who doesn’t like a little debate? For some, I know, it’s uncomfortable. But honestly, it’s a good thing. It let’s you refine your logic, clarify your position and point out misinterpretations. A little more than a year ago, I wrote post titled The PDM Revolution is Upon Us, Brought to You by CAD in the Cloud, which postulated what would happen as some PLM providers moved their CAD offerings to the cloud. Fast forward to today, and things haven't quite played out as I suggested.
